Project Update: April 15, 2018

At the Community Forum on April 2, we announced a scaled down version of our North Kingstown Community Solar proposal. This decision to scale down our proposal is a direct result of listening to the valuable feedback from the local community.

View the full presentation here.  In addition, our team has drafted a detailed Q&A intended to answer typical questions about the project.

Updated Project Highlights:

  • The project has been scaled back from 32MW to 13MW, a 60% reduction in size.
  • We have scaled back the developable acreage from approximately 190 to 130 acres, based upon early conceptual design.
  • Approximately 400 acres will be preserved and conveyed to a conservation land trust immediately upon permitting approvals, approximately 75% of the site.
  • At the end of the working life of the project, the remaining developed portion will be similarly conveyed to the trust.
  • Direct abutters be offered a 100% discount off of their electric bills for 25 years (approximately 60 households).
  • In addition, the next 100 North Kingstown households to sign up as subscribers will be offered a 50% discount on their electric bills for 25 years.

The North Kingstown Community Solar project ensures the entire 567-acre site will be protected and will never be used for housing or any other form of permanent development. No other option exists that will offer this level of environmental protection.

Environmental and Community Benefits

Beyond the land protections and subscriber savings, the proposed project will provide environmental benefits and financial benefits to the North Kingstown community.

Environmental Benefits

For each MW of installed capacity, the North Kingstown Community Solar project will reduce  pollutants into the local atmosphere equivalent to the following:

  • ~2,500,000 pounds of atmospheric carbon annually eliminated
  • The equivalent of ~129,000 gallons of gasoline eliminated
  • The equivalent of ~150 passenger vehicles removed from our streets
  • The equivalent of ~18,000 light bulbs eliminated per year
  • Planting of pollinator-friendly groundcover – creates new habitat for bees, birds, small mammals and other wildlife.
  • Over the life of the solar facility, the equivalent of ~57,000 trees planted for 40 years. (At ~13 MW, that is equivalent to ~750,000 trees planted.) Solar sequesters far more carbon than do trees (27x, in our analysis).
Pollinator Habitat

Our proposal includes planting pollinator-friendly ground cover, creating new habitats for bees, birds, small mammals and other wildlife.

  • Over the life of the solar facility, the equivalent of ~57,000 trees planted for 40 years. (At ~13 MW, that is equivalent to ~750,000 trees planted.) Solar sequesters far more carbon than do trees (27x, in our analysis).
Property Tax Benefits

~$1.97mm in personal property tax generated for the Town, a ~258% increase over current use; significant economic benefit to the community without taxing community infrastructure. Also an additional real property tax increase.

Job Creation

Development process already utilizing various local legal and land study firms expertise.

  • Construction of the project will create 100 – 125 jobs over a 6 – 9 month process and will attempt to subcontract locally as much as practically possible.
  • The regional operations and maintenance service firm will service the project site over the long term (likely Rhode Island-based firm).
Community Investment

A portion of proceeds from the project will be used for investment in local community initiatives, as suggested by local leaders/stakeholders.
